How To Find And Pick Your Mentor
Unlocking the Power of Mentorship
TWT Newsletter #16
There are many benefits to having a mentor/coach in your life. They offer perspective and a vantage point you do not have currently.
Mentors essentially collapse time for you. And if you are trying to achieve a high degree of success and wealth - you know time is the most important asset we have. Mentors help you navigate and avoid the problems and issues you're going through/will go through. They offer their guidance as they have made many mistakes. They can guide you through your endeavors with a better understanding since they have already been there and done that.
It is difficult to find a mentor and a few ways I have found mine have been through:
Looking inside my network or one degree from it
Conferences & Local Meet-ups
Paying for it (I think everyone should have a paid mentor and I’ll tell you why)
There are two types of mentor/coach. One is a free mentor and another is a paid one. I believe you should always have both.
I just spent 3 days at a Real Estate retreat with my paid mentor as I am write this. I paid my mentor 30k and never regretted it. The reason is because I know what I want in my mentor. He fits all my boxes for what I look for in a mentor and I’ll share what you should look for when looking for one.
First off, imagine your ideal mentor (visualizing it goes a long way). He/She should either be a few steps ahead of you or 1,000 steps ahead of you. It’s good to have both.
Ask yourself these questions about your ideal mentor:
Is this person where you want to be in the future?
Does the person’s core values and methodology align with yours?
Has this person taken other’s to a level of success and wealth above yours?
Can being around this person and their network/connections elevate you?
Number 2 is pretty important. You don’t want a mentor that doesn’t align with you. You won’t respect them and ignore their advice/perspectives. Which would be wasting your time and potentially money.
You never want to ask for mentorship, especially from whoever you're trying to get free mentoring from. It comes off too strong. Usually the best way is to add value to them in some way (since you are not paying for their time and expertise).
Identify who you want to be your mentor. Try to add value to them by recommending a book, podcast, or publication that they’ll find interesting. Take them out for lunch and learn about their background. See if you can offer some kind of service they need such as social media management, design, marketing, etc. Most people follow the law of reciprocity - where if you do something for someone, they usually want to return the favor.
Having both a paid and free mentor or coach can provide you valuable support and guidance in different ways. A paid mentor or coach typically offers a higher level of expertise and more personalized attention since you invest in their services. They may have specialized knowledge or experience in your specific field or industry. They can provide you with targeted feedback and advice to help you reach your goals faster and efficiently.
On the other hand, a free mentor or coach can offer you a different perspective and may provide you with more general advice and guidance. They may have experience in a related field or industry, or simply have a wealth of life experience and wisdom to share. A free mentor or coach can also offer emotional support and encouragement, which can be just as valuable as practical advice.
Having both a paid and free mentor or coach allows you to benefit from both approaches. You can gain specialized knowledge and targeted feedback from your paid mentor, while also receiving broader guidance and emotional support from your free mentor. This can help you build a well-rounded support system and increase your chances of success.
I will usually choose to pay for a mentor everytime. Because I want to establish a relationship with them and pay them for their time. It allows me to jump ahead, instead of paying with time (as well as money if I make mistakes that could be avoided by having a mentor or coach).
Achieving the level of mindset and hyper-growth has been through people’s support - especially my mentors.
This newsletter is a special thanks to them.
