Opportunity v.s. Obligation

Embrace an Abundant Mindset

TWT Newsletter #20

When you’re building your wealth, you will always have a constant battle between doing work to create more success in your life v.s. doing something more entertaining. For example the gym, most of us don’t like going to the gym, but know it has many health benefits. It makes you feel good, stay in shape, and live longer. Yet we decide to do other things that don’t serve us as well - such as watching Netflix.

What stops many people from doing something so good for us?

It’s their mindset on the activity and actions they need to take. We, including my old self, see it as a chore and an obligation.

Our brain labels these activities as chores and obligations, which results in resistance to doing them. Because our brain is programmed to keep us safe and use the least amount of energy for survival. We need to overcome that resistance to take actions, which will enable us to live healthier and wealthier, like going to the gym.

Instead, we must shift our mindset and look at these activities as opportunities. When we look at it as an opportunity we view life and things from a different perspective. We see everything as an opportunity to take action and do the activity.

When you see going to the gym as a way to get fit, feel good, live longer and as an outlet for stress - you start loving it and yourself for doing it, because you're taking advantage of the opportunity. When you see someone at the hospital who can’t walk, or is in a coma it should be a constant reminder that you have the opportunity for a healthier and wealthier life by doing this “chore”.

By having this mindset, you will be engaged and motivated in the task at hand, as well as have a sense of excitement and curiosity about the possibilities of your opportunities.

Focusing on this abundant mindset also promotes:

Positive Outlook: Focusing on opportunities allows you to adopt a positive outlook on life. You will recognize the potential for growth, learning, and achievement. This positive mindset can improve your overall well-being and help us navigate challenges more effectively.

Creativity and Innovation: Opportunities often arise from situations that challenge us to think creatively and explore new possibilities. When we prioritize opportunities, we open ourselves up to innovative thinking and problem-solving. This mindset encourages us to think outside the box and consider alternative approaches, leading to new insights and breakthroughs.

Personal Growth and Development: Embracing opportunities promotes personal growth and development. When we seek out new experiences and challenges, we expand our knowledge, skills, and perspectives. You will also be more intentional with your choice of words. This is because you’ll learn when to say what and when not to say because you understand that the language that you use towards yourself and others shapes your reality.

Increased resilience: When we focus on opportunities rather than obligations, we become more adaptable and resilient in the face of change or setbacks. By embracing the possibilities that come with each situation, we can find alternative paths or pivot when needed. This flexibility allows us to bounce back from challenges and maintain a positive mindset.

It's important to note that while focusing on opportunities is valuable, there are also obligations and responsibilities that cannot be ignored. However, adopting an opportunity-focused mindset can help us approach our obligations with a more positive and proactive attitude, making them more manageable and rewarding.

How I have started to look at things differently is that everything I do is an opportunity. And that everything in the universe is working for me. Goals become more clear and I understand that this world has endless opportunities for me. I stop worrying about missed opportunities because there will be bigger, better and exciting opportunities for me in the future.

There is no magical solution to all your problems if you have an abundance mentality. It only puts them in perspective. Our minds are designed to function from a place of scarcity and fear, so they're designed to help us survive. But here's the thing: you can when you adopt an abundant mindset, you can change your perspective on things.
